5x5 tips for the Neuhausen-Nymphenburg district

“You immediately feel at home here“

Since 1999, Norwegian Reidun Alvestad-Aschenbrenner has been guiding guests and locals through her adopted home of Munich, and also through beautiful Neuhausen. She particularly likes this place, because the chairwoman of the “Münchner Gästeführer Verein“ (Munich tour guide association) has lived in the district for over 40 years.

“When I guide guests through Neuhausen, I show them the path along Nymphenburger Schlosskanal (palace canal). The cemetery near the Winthirkirche (church) is also interesting: famous Munich personalities such as Sigi Sommer or Oskar von Miller found their final resting place here. And Herz-Jesu-Kirche is an architectural highlight. By the way, you shouldn't miss the neighbouring Gern district – once a lively artists' quarter.“

Five attractions in Neuhausen-Nymphenburg

Neuhausen stretches around its popular green spaces, which form the heart of the district. The largest and most popular is Nymphenburger Schlosspark with its lush 180 hectares, numerous wildlife and stately buildings. Adjacent to it is the Botanischer Garten (Botanical Garden) – in the greenhouses visitors can admire various exhibitions and species from all over the world. Not far away is the Hirschgarten, a park that is also home to Munich's largest beer garden.

Five restaurants, cafés and bars in Neuhausen-Nymphenburg

Neuhausen is not a fast-moving district, many things endure here – and that applies not only to the 350-year-old palace, but also to the culinary scene. 45-year-old Café Ruffini can almost be regarded a youngster in this district. The Taxisgarten, one of the quarter´s most popular beer gardens, first opened its doors in 1924 and the Bayerischer Großwirt is the oldest restaurant in the Neuhausen district.

Five attractions in Neuhausen-Nymphenburg

The two districts of Neuhausen and Nymphenburg were only merged into one district in the 1990s. While Nymphenburg with its parks and colony of villas impresses with its space, tranquillity and nature, central Neuhausen captivates with its cultural scene. Here visitors will find some very good, small theatres such as Blutenburg Theatre.

Five shopping spots in Neuhausen-Nymphenburg

It almost seems as if there is a separate store for every foodstuff in Neuhausen – at least fans of tea, cheese or Mexican tortillas are guaranteed to find what they are looking for. In addition, there are great spots for selected fashion and interior design.

The district's distinctive features: Architecture dating from around 1900

There are many old buildings around Schloss Nymphenburg, including the Villenkolonie (villa neighbourhood). But also, the centre of Neuhausen has many beautiful houses and unique streets – such as Schulstrasse, Blutenburgstrasse or Volkartstrasse.
